Grant Bennett Relishing Stud Manager Role At Milan Park In Cambridge
By Phillip Quay
Spending four years away from the thoroughbred breeding world only made Grant Bennett aware of how much it is in his blood.
During those four years Bennett set up a successful lawn mowing business which he established in 2010.
"Having my own business to operate was certainly a big change for me," Bennett said.
However, it was his biggest lawn mowing client which ironically drew him back into the thoroughbred industry.
"My biggest lawn mowing client, Ascot Farm, offered me a full time job of running their spelling farm and after four years away from horses I was ready to return back into the industry," Bennett said.
Bennett subsequently took up the position of stud manager of boutique Cambridge stud farm Milan Park in July, 2016. That rejuvenated a career with horses that he had first commenced at Fayette Park Stud in 1994.
Bennett then had stints at Waikato Stud and Rodmor Stud before he became the inaugural winner of the Sunline Trust International Management scholarship in 2002.
Following his return he had one season at Ashwell Farm in Cambridge before heading north to Karaka to manage Stoney Bridge Farm for four years.
Following that he became the stud manager of Westbury Stud for five years which was a great opportunity.
Previously owned and set up by Bob Emery when known as Belvedere Farm, Milan Park is a 41.2 hectare boutique stud farm that is home to his 25 broodmares. The farm is owned by Tony and Vicki Rider and the operation will offer 15 yearlings at the 2018 sales series.
"Milan Park is a beautifully set up and maintained establishment that provides the ideal environment for young thoroughbreds to grow and develop.
Located on the golden mile in Cambridge, the heart of the Waikato breeding scene, Milan Park is resident to such mares as Group 1 winning Irish Fling, Group 3 winning and stakes producing Vickeezchardonay, Group 1 placed Brianna as well as the stakes producers Danex and Grey Swallow.
Milan Park is a share-holder in the champion sire, Savabeel, as well as young and up and coming stallions such as Sacred Falls, Per Incanto, Tarzino, Ocean Park, Tavaci and Contributor.
"I am looking forward to the future at Milan Park and being part of the team to continue producing horses that reach the elite level."
