The inaugural 30 Sports 1 Day multiple sporting event in Taupo in 2018, is one man’s mission to raise awareness of obesity issues.

A multiple sports event, which will see one competitor doing 30 sports in just one day, along with invited celebrities and sports people completing stages of the event. It's the first of its type in New Zealand - the tentative launch date is 17 Feb 2018.

The brainchild of Taupo man Paul Henson, the 30 Sports 1 day innovative event is aimed to get people a lot more active in the fight against obesity. “I'm planning to do a day of sports to raise awareness and to provide a solution for obesity issues in New Zealand,” says Henson. “As far as I know there is no sports event that combines so many different sports.”

The mantra of the event is that if I can do 30 sports in one day, you can do 30 minutes a day, the global target for healthy exercise.  A tentative date for the multi-sports event has been set for Saturday 17th February 2018.

A man on a mission, Taupo-based Paul Henson wants to use this event as inspiration to others to get active and healthy. “Obesity is a fully preventable condition that costs the taxpayer NZ$300 million a year,” adds Mr Henson.  “There is no solution to the obesity epidemic proposed to date that actually works – obesity rates are constantly increasing in New Zealand and globally.”

“I’ll be 57 when I do the event and I’m still fit, healthy and active. I’m mountain biking twice a week and rock climbing once a week.”

“I have done a new sport nearly every year for the past 35 years. Sport is great for my physical and mental well-being.”

“I am at the stage in life where I am happy to help others achieve their goals and be pro-active about improving the general well-being of New Zealanders,” says Henson.

On the programme of events planned for the day are: mountain bike, outdoor rock climb, kayak, water ski, jetski, big boat sail, fish, lake swim, road cycle, sky dive, small boat sail, windsurf, motorbike track, V8, motocross bike, gliding, clay target shooting, velodrome cycle, golf, soccer golf, frisbee golf, squash, volleyball, netball, basketball, table tennis, water polo, gym workout, indoor soccer, badminton, indoor rock climb, swim medley, bungy, tennis, mini train (for fun), bowls, run, hole in one golf, mini golf, cricket, parasail, and paddle board.

"The goal is to initially raise awareness for obesity issues, then introduce a lasting solution to obesity problems - the H5 Corporate Health Competition. Corporate groups will be encouraged to compete against each other for the healthiest employees. Eventually I can see that the competitive and co-operative nature of companies will be more beneficial than information aimed at individuals."
