Keep your pets happy and healthy this summer with these tips from Hamilton’s leading boarding kennels and cattery Longtail Pet Motel.
We all love spending a kiwi summer outdoors with our pets, but often hot weather can spell danger for our furry friends. To help protect your pet this summer, take these simple precautions from Hamilton’s leading boarding kennels and cattery Longtail Pet Motel.
The summer sum can really heat up asphalt, so make sure you protect your pet’s paws. Not only can it burn the pads of your pet’s paws but it can also increase your pet’s body temperature which can lead to overheating. “As a guide, don't walk your dog between 1 and 4 PM, which is usually when the day is at it’s hottest,” advises Longtail Pet Motel.
Does your pet have a thick coat? Then consider getting it a haircut! Generally, one inch is a good length to avoid sunburn and also keep your pet nice and cool. “You can get animal friendly sunscreen to rub on the tips of their ears, on the end of their nose, and on their stomach. However, do not use normal sunscreen to your animal as it has ingredients that can be toxic to animals,” adds Longtail Pet Motel.
If your pet spends a lot of time outdoors, make sure they have a shady place to get out of the sun. “Also, be careful not to over-exercise them, and keep them indoors when it’s extremely hot,” comments Longtail Pet Motel.
Make sure you know the symptoms of overheating in pets. These symptoms include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse. “If your pet starts displaying these symptoms, get them to a vet straight away,” says Longtail Pet Motel.
Always provide plenty of fresh drinking water at this time of year. Canned food can go bad quite quickly in warm weather and can attract flies and parasites so you may want to consider feeding a dry pet food instead.
