Matamata-based Kilgravin Lodge will present the largest draft of any vendor at the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sales at Karaka next month with its 34 entries including a half-brother to champion Australian galloper Alinghi.

The sales, being held at Karaka on November 19 and 20, have become a happy hunting ground for Kilgravin Lodge in recent years with a number of its graduates going on to become very successful on the racetrack.

Success stories from their recent line-ups have included the multiple Group One winner Sangster (VRC Derby, Darci Brahma International Stakes, Auckland Cup) along with Sunshine Kingdom who was secured for $24,000 from the 2011 line-up and has been the stakes winner of three races from a light career in Macau and from the same sale came the Gr.2 Avondale Guineas winner Valbuena, who was passed in at $45,000.

Other graduates from last year’s draft have included Rite Of Spring (4 wins in Singapore), Invincible Gold (a winner in Singapore from 3 starts) and Catamac who was an impressive winner on debut at Riccarton in August.

"The Ready to Run has always been a good sale for us and good horses, as we know, can come from anywhere in the market,” Eion Kemp said. “We have had a lot of success and in many ways it’s down to not putting these young horses under a huge amount of pressure and we take them along quietly and that can then produce sound older horses that perform on the track.”

This year’s draft is not only the largest put forward to the sale by Kilgravin Lodge but also rates as its best-ever in terms of quality.

“It is an outstanding draft not only by quantity but also by quality,” says Eion.

Sires represented in the draft include: Fastnet Rock, Savabeel, Bel Esprit, Bernadini, Testa Rossa, Excellent Art, Shocking, Makfi, Thorn Park, Mastercraftsman, Guillotine, Sebring, New Appoach and Thewayyourare.

The stand-out of the draft is Lot 80 which a Fastnet Rock x Oceanfast colt who is a half-brother to the champion filly Alinghi. “His bloodlines are impeccable and he is going to attract plenty of attention from buyers. He is a good mover and gets over the ground well.”

Alinghi was the champion Australian three-year-old filly of 2004/05 and won 11 races during her incredible career. Her Group 1 wins comprised the Newmarket Handicap, One Thousand Guineas, Blue Diamond Stakes and Swettenham Stud Stakes.

Other highlights of the draft include:

Lot 34 – Bernadini x Luellen colt: big strong athletic horse and a great mover

Lot 88 – Seabring x Our Miss Vitality colt: dam is half-sister to Gr. 1 New Zealand Derby winner Hades.

Lot 93 – Savabeel x Parisienne Eyes colt: well muscled and outstanding type of horse, will turn plenty of heads.

Lot 251 – Darci Brahma x Battocchi gelding: a striking half-brother to Group 1 Telegraph Handicap winner Guiseppini and looks an ideal 1400m/1600m horse.

Lot 267 – Bel Esprit x Blue Quail colt: nice type of horse who needs some time but very professional in the way he works.

Lot 314 – Tavistock x Dantessa colt: his sire is firing on all cylinders at present and is going to command attention for this reason, a lovely athletic type of horse.
